A brief history of medical diode lasers in the UK

1992

Pioneering medical laser firm Diomed was spun out of the University of Cambridge.

1993

World’s first diode laser launched by Diomed for use in a wide range of medical specialisms, offering high levels of precision with minimal bleeding.

1998

World’s first photodynamic therapy laser launched by Diomed for use in cancer treatment.

2000s

Diomed pioneered the minimally invasive EVLA procedure for varicose veins using diode lasers and optical fibres.

2008

Diomed was taken over by US company AngioDynamics; two new diode lasers added to the product range.

2012

Angiodynamics ceased manufacturing in the UK.

June 2012

Former Diomed / AngioDynamics engineers Steve Hayden and David Flood set up Excel Lasers to supply lasers to the UK medical and veterinary communities and to service Diomed and AngioDynamics lasers worldwide. 

Both Steve and David have unrivalled expertise in the field. David joined Diomed in 1993 and was responsible for developing the optical systems in both Diomed’s and AngioDynamics’ laser products. Steve joined Diomed in 2000 specialising in mechanical design and in the development and packaging of sterile disposables. 

Today

Excel Lasers sells and supports a wide range of medical and veterinary lasers and accessories, helping you to find the right products for your clinical needs. It is also the only UK distributor of the Onemytis2, a new type of electrosurgical instrument for vets which is transforming soft tissue surgery.
